Cartago province extends east of San Jose and south into the Cordillera de Talamanca, a region made fertile by deposits from Volcan Irazu. The section we've covered is a heavily populated, farmed and industrialized region, centred on Cartago town, a major shopping and transportation hub for the southern Valle Central. The town itself is seldom used as a place to stay, however, and many of the area's attractions are usually visited on day-trips from San Jose. It takes about forty minutes to reach Cartago on the good (toll) highway from San Jose. From Cartago there are road connections to Turrialba, on the eastern slopes of Irazu, and the Orosi valley, and south via the Interamericana over the hump of the Cordillera Central to San Isidro and the Valle de el General
