Getting To Volcan Poas
Most visitors get to the volcano on a pre-arranged tour from San Jose (approximately US$35 per person for a 4-5 hour trip, including return transport and guide). All kinds of combination packages with other Valle Central sites exist: the "Four-in-One" tour organized by Expediciones Tropicales (tel 257-4171, www.costaricainfo.com ) is reasonably priced and very popular, and also takes in the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, the Braulio Carrillo National Park and a boat ride on the Sarapiqui river (US$79 per person including breakfast, lunch and guide; 11hr). Alternatively, a Tuasa bus leaves daily at 8.30am from C 12/14, Av 2 in San Jose, travelling via Alajuela and returning from the volcano at 2.30pm (US$3 each way; 2hr). If you want to reach Poas before both tour buses and dense cloud cover arrive, you'll need either to drive or take a taxi from Alajuela (roughly US$30) or San Jose (US$45-50) - reasonably affordable if split between a group of people. The park's visitor centre shows videos of the volcano and has a snack shop, which also serves hot coffee, though you're probably better off packing a picnic lunch. Make sure you bring a sweater and wet-weather gear with you in the rainy season. No camping is allowed in the park.
