A fifteen-kilometre drive east of Poas is one of Costa Rica's newest and most popular attractions, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens (daily 8.30am-4pm; US$24; www.waterfallgardens.com ), an immaculate series of riverside trails linking five waterfalls on the Rio La Paz, all set in a large colourful garden planted with native shrubs and flowers - there's also a large butterfly observatory and a hummingbird garden which is home to sixteen different species. From the reception centre, visitors take one of several self-guided tours which wind prettily through the site and along the river, where viewing platforms mean that at various points you're both above and underneath the waterfalls, the highest of which, Magia Blanca , crashes deafeningly down some 40m into swirling white water. The marked trails conclude at the top of the La Paz Waterfall , Costa Rica's most photographed cascade (it can also be seen from the public highway which runs over a large rickety bridge below). There's currently no public transport to the gardens, and most people visit them as part of an organized tour from San Jose - Expediciones Tropicales (tel 257-4171, fax 257-4124, www.costaricainfo.com ) include La Paz as part of their "Four-in-One" highlights tour (US$79). If you're driving, take a right at the junction in Poasito towards Vara Blanca and, on reaching the village, take a left at the gas station and follow the well-marked signs for 5km.
