Twelve kilometres southwest of Alajuela, La Guacima Butterfly Farm (daily 9.30am-5pm, last tour at 3pm; US$15; www.butterflyfarm.co.cr ) breeds valuable pupae for export to zoos and botanical gardens all over the world. The farm also has beautiful views over the Valle Central, though in the wet season you should aim to get there early, as the rain forces the butterflies to hide themselves away, while the clouds obscure the view. On a sunny day, however, when the butterflies are active, it's a glorious sight. From Alajuela, buses (marked "La Guacima Abajo") leave from the area southwest of the main bus terminal; the Butterfly Farm is practically the last stop. Buses from San Jose (2hr) leave from Av 1, C 20/22 daily except Sunday at 11am and 2pm. The largest aviary in Central America, Zoo-Ave (daily 9am-5pm; US$9), at Dulce Nombre, 5km northeast of La Garita, is just about the best place in the country to see the fabulous and many-coloured birds - especially macaws - which inhabit Costa Rica. The La Garita bus from Alajuela (15min) passes right by, leaving from the area southwest of the main terminal.
