Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
Puerto Viejo has a surprisingly cosmopolitan range of places to eat . Good, traditional Creole food is served at Miss Sam's , and the ATEC can put you in touch with village women who cook typical regional meals on request. Although quiet during the day, Puerto Viejo has a lively nightlife . If you're after a peaceful drink, one of the nicest spots in town is the speacious veranda in front of the Cosmisaratio store - buy your beer from the shop and drink it from the bottle as you watch the sun slide prettily into the sea. Bambu , on the eastern edge of town. Beachfront reggae disco which gets absolutely packed on Mondays and Fridays; great fun. El Cafe Rico , opposite Cabinas Casa Verde . Dutch-run cafe with the best coffee in town, tasty sandwiches, crepes and breakfast. Nice rooms (US$10-15) also available. Johnny's Place , on the seafront near the police station. Large airy disco with bonfires on the beach. Very popular at weekends. Miss Sam's , three blocks back from the seafront. Wonderful Caribbean home-cooking at very reasonable prices. Often full at lunchimes. Parquecito , on the edge of town towards Manzanillo. Lively bar-restaurant with sea views, cold beer and good atmosphere - although the food's not up to much. Pan Pay , behind Johnny's Place . Popular breakfast spot and bakery with croissants, cakes and delicious Spanish tortilla. Sunset Reggae Bar , on the seafront near the bus stop. Groovy little bar with delicious pizza from the wood-fired oven, plus an entertaining Wednesday open-mike session with tables set out on the shore and passing musicians joining in. The Place , one block back from the bus stop. Attractive cafe specializing in vegetarian dishes and seafood, popular with tourists who are sick of rice, beans and pizza - try the tasty coconut-flavoured curries.
