Atec and Tours To The Kekoldi Reserve
Skirted by the KekoLdi reserve, inhabited by about two hundred Bribri and Cabecar peoples, Puerto Viejo retains strong links with indigenous culture . The Associacion Talamanquena de Ecoturismo y Conservacion, or ATEC (tel & fax 750-0191, www.greencoast.com/atec.htm ) is a grassroots organization set up by members of the local community - Afro-Caribbeans, Bribri indigenous peoples and Spanish-descended inhabitants. As well as being able to tell you where to buy locally made products such as banana vinegar, guava jam, coconut oil, and jewellery made from coconut shells, seashells and bamboo, they arrange some of the most authentic and interesting tours in Costa Rica. If you're spending even just a couple of days in the Talamanca region, an ATEC-arranged trip is a must - contact their Puerto Viejo office at least one day in advance.
