Puerto Limon Moving On From Puerto Limon

Moving On From Puerto Limon

Heading north to Tortuguero , shallow-bottomed private lanchas make the trip up the canal from the docks at Moin (3hr). It's best to arrive at the docks early (7-9am) although you ought to be able to find boatmen willing to take you until 2pm. Expect to pay around US$50 each return for a group of four to six people; if you are travelling alone or in a couple, try to get a group together at the docks. The bus stop for Moin is at C 4, Av 5/6, 200m north of the Mercado Central, but the bus has no set schedule and only leaves when it's full (more or less every thirty minutes), so a taxi (US$3) may be a better option.

Buses to San Jose start running at 5am from the main bus terminal and continue hourly until 7pm. Direct buses to San Jose are run by Coopelimon and Coopecaribenos, whose ticket windows are side by side; Coopetraga (tel 758-0618) also has services from the main bus terminal to Siquerres and Guapiles , from where there are onward bus connect ions to the capital. Destinations south of Limon are served from the Transportes MEPE office (tel 221-0524) at C 3, Av 4, 100m north of the Mercado Central, from where buses leave four times daily (from 7am until 6pm) to Cahuita (1hr) and eight

times (also 7am until 6pm) to Puerto Viejo (1hr 30min-2hr). The Sixaola bus also stops in both places. Two buses (6am & 2.30pm; 2hr) go direct to Manzanillo village in the heart of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, via Puerto Viejo.

Taxis line up on Av 2 around the corner from the San Jose bus stop: they'll do long-haul trips to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo (US$30-40), so if you're in a group, renting a taxi can be far more convenient than taking the bus.
