Activities Around Tortuguero
Almost as popular as the turtle tours are Tortuguero's boat tours through the canos , or lagoons, to spot animals and birds, such as dignified-looking herons, cranes and kingfishers. Most lodges have canoes you can take out on the canal - a great way to get around if you're handy with a paddle, but do stick to the main canal as it's easy to get lost in the complex lagoon system northwest of the village. In the south of the village, Ruben Aragon, 50m north of the ranger station, right by the water, rents traditional Miskito-style boats and canoes for about US$8 an hour, or US$15 with a guide-paddler. It's also possible to climb Cerro Tortuguero , an ancient volcanic deposit looming 119m above the flat coastal plain 6km north of the village. A climb up the gently sloping side (90min round trip) leads you to the "peak", from where there are good views of flat jungle and inland waterways. Ask at the village information kiosk or at the ranger station.
