Parque Nacional Tortuguero Eating, Drinking and Nightlife

Eating, Drinking and Nightlife

Tortuguero village offers good homely food, typically Caribbean, with wonderful fresh fish . The only disadvantage is that prices tend to be high: expect to pay up to twice as much for a meal as you'd pay in other parts of Costa Rica. For entertainment, the Centro Social La Culebra has a nightly disco , though the clientele can be a bit rough. Bar Brisas del Mar (known to the locals as El Bochinche ) is better, with a large, semi open-air dance floor and a good sound-and-light system (when it's not visiting Limon). You can hear the sea from your table and the atmosphere is low-key except on Saturday nights, when the lively weekly disco attracts a large local crowd and goes on well into the small hours.

El Dollar , mid-village, on the waterfront. In a great position on the river, with decent local food cooked to order.

El Muellecito , next to the pulperia . Tortuguero's best breakfast option, with tasty pancakes and fruit salad.

Miss Junie's , north end of village path, 50m before the Natural History Museum. Solid Caribbean food - red beans, jerk chicken, rice, chayote and breadfruit, all on the same plate - by local cook Miss Junie, dished up with ice-cold beers in a large dining room with gingham tablecloths and cool white walls. Miss Junie also cooks for the park rangers, so you need to ask a day in advance or in the morning whether she can fit you in.

Miss Miriams , adjacent to village soccer

pitch (and a good spot to watch the village teams in action). Cheerful and immaculate restaurant serving Caribbean food at very reasonable prices.

The Vine , opposite the Jungle Souvenir Shop. Cafe, run by the owners of the souvenir shop, with good coffee, cheesecake and brownies. Closed during the rainy season.

Tropical Lodge Bar , mid-village on the path to the national park entrance. Noisy and entertaining village bar with perfect sunset views over the river.
