Information
A display on the turtles' habits, habitat and history surrounds the information kiosk in the centre of the village. Officially you should buy tickets for turtle tours here; the park rangers open the kiosk at 5pm, and this is a good time to find a local guide. In addition, Canadian naturalist and local resident Darryl Loth (tel 392-3201, fax 710-0547, www.safari.jumptravel.com ) runs a small information centre in the village and can arrange tours, such as boat trips and hikes up Cerro Tortuguero. At the north end of the village, there's also a Natural History Museum (daily 10am-5.30pm; US$1), with a small but informative exhibition explaining the life-cycle of sea turtles and a short history of turtling in the area. The pulperia , 50m south of the information kiosk, houses a public phone; there's another one at Miss Junie's restaurant which you can use for outgoing calls. There are no bank or moneychanging facilities in Tortuguero - bring all the cash you'll need with you - and though there's a correo in the middle of the village, mail may take three or four weeks just to make its way to Puerto Limon.
