Restaurants and Sodas
Jauja/Pizzeria de Beppe , Avenida Central. Good breakfasts and pizzas served in a pleasant outdoor garden setting. Las Tinajas , west side of Parque Central. The outdoor tables on the veranda of this old house make a good spot for watching the goings-on in the Parque while enjoying a refresco or beer. Basic casados and excellent hamburgers (US$3) are also served. There's live music on Thursdays and Sundays. Pan y Miel , next to the Restaurante Jauja on Avenida Central. More a cafeteria than a restaurant, with buffet breakfasts, good cakes and coffee. Pizzeria Pronto , C 1, 200m south of the church. Situated in an old adobe house, with wooden tables and decor and a covered garden patio, the friendly Pronto serves excellent - if smallish - pizzas (US$4-5) cooked in a giant wood oven. The restaurant's bar is popular with gringos. Pokopi , 100m west of Gas Station Corner, on the road to Nicoya opposite Hotel el Sitio . Fastidiously clean (they mop the floor every two seconds) and decorated with colourful toucans, this pleasant restaurant serves huge, dripping burgers for US$3, and very tasty snapper in garlic butter ( pargo en ajillo ) for about US$7. Eat early on weekends, though: the Kuru disco starts up around 9.30pm, and might drown out your supper. Rancho Dulce , 50m south of the gobernacion . Tiny soda serving casados , sandwiches, empanadas and refrescos : great for a cheap lunch. You can sit at the tiny outdoor stools (if you have a small bottom) or tables.
