Activities
Swimming is not great around Tamarindo, as the waves are fairly heavy and there are rip tides. Most people are content to paddle in the rocky coves and tide-pools south of the town. A number of outfitters in Tamarindo rent surfboards, windsurfers and snorkelling equipment ; most charge US$15-20 a day for a surfboard and US$12 a day for snorkelling gear. You can also rent bikes and boogie boards (both about US$8 per day). Agua Rica Diving (tel & fax 653-0094) have a good reputation and do certification courses and dive trips in the area - their trip to the Islas Catalinas is recommended. The Iguana Surf Shop, south of the village (tel & fax 653-0148), has a larger selection of surfboards, boogie boards and snorkelling gear. In addition, numerous operators, such as Papagayo Excursions at the northern entrance to the village (tel 653-0254, papagayo@racsa.co.cr ), offer turtle tours to Las Baulas in nesting season (about US$15 per person).
