Arrival and Information
Sansa and Travelair planes from San Jose arrive at the airstrip 6km south of town at Carrillo, from where 4WD taxis make the trip to Samara for about US$6. The express bus from San Jose leaves daily at 12:15pm, 12:30pm and 6:15pm, and arrives at Samara some six hours later, stopping about 50m in front of the beach right at the centre of the village. The express bus back to San Jose currently leaves at 4.30pm and 9am Monday to Friday, and at 7am and 1pm on Sunday. There are buses to Nicoya at 5am, 7am, 1.30pm and 4.30pm (2hr). You can buy tickets for some bus services from the Transporte Alfaro office (daily 7am-5pm), next door to the Pulperia Mileth in the centre of the village, which also sells potato chips, suntan lotion and bottles of cold water, and is home to the village's public telephone . Samara's correo (Mon-Fri 7.30am-6pm) - a small shack really - 50m before the entrance to the beach, offers minimal services, and there is nowhere to change money (other than at the large hotels), so bring plenty of colones, especially in low season. There aren't as many tours or other activities at Samara as around other places on the peninsula, due to the sheer distance and driving time it takes to get anywhere. Jorge Gonzalez does taxi tours (tel 656-0081, mobile 390-4198) to the pottery-making village of Guatil for US$40 per day, and to Rincon de la Vieja (US$70 per day, including park entrance). You could try Samara Adventures (tel 656-0655, j_esqui@yahoo.com ), 100m south of the soccer field at the Super Samara, for tours to Ostional Wildlife Reserve, and for whitewater rafting and sports-fishing trips anywhere in the country.
