The Rio Tempisque Ferry
The Rio Tempisque ferry carries cars and passengers across the river between Puerto Moreno, 17km from the Nicoya-Carmona road, and a point 25km west of the Interamericana on the mainland. Crossing here will save you a 110-kilometre drive up and over the cleft of the peninsula, via Liberia, but leave yourself plenty of time on weekends (Fridays and Sundays especially) and holidays, when the line-up of traffic can mean waits of four to five hours. Whatever time you cross, and in whichever direction, be in line about an hour before departure. Unless curtailed by bad weather in the wet season, eastbound crossings take place on the half-hour between 6.30am and 8.30pm, westbound every hour on the hour from 6am to 8pm - it takes twenty minutes.
