Eating, Drinking and Nightlife
Food, even fish, is pricey in Puntarenas: you'll be lucky to get casados or platos del dia for less than US$6. As usual the mercado is a good place to pick up a cheap meal and a refresco , although you should avoid drinking anything made with the local water. The beachside sodas and kiosks near the old dock are more appealing places to linger for a quiet drink or a seafood lunch. The best restaurants in town are on the Paseo de los Turistas. Alohas is most popular place in town for an evening drink, with an extensive and expensive menu, and nice breezy outdoor tables where you can sit looking out to sea. Casa de los Mariscos , between C 7 and C 9, has good seafood, though it's not cheap (US$6-10). Restaurante La Terraza at C 21/23 is the nicest place in town, with a reasonably priced menu concentrating on seafood, pizza and pasta. Soda Macarena at the bus stop has cheap and delicious food, including all kinds of fruit plates and toasted sandwiches; try their "Churchills" - similar to a crushed-ice granizado , but made with ice cream.
