Getting To Monteverde
Getting to Monteverde independently from San Jose , especially in the dry season, entails some pre-planning. You'll need to buy your bus ticket as much as five days in advance and, once you've arrived, buy your return ticket immediately. In the rainy months you can buy your ticket on the day or (better) a day in advance. There's less demand for bus seats travelling from Puntarenas , and you should be able to get away with not booking. In the dry months you should also book a room ; in the wet season you can just turn up. Give yourself at least three days in the area; one to get up there, at least one to explore (two is better), and another to descend. All the major operators offer tours to Monteverde from San Jose; their advantage is a better rate on the more comfortable hotels and transport, but otherwise you can see Monteverde just as well on your own.
