Orientation
Most of the services and the cheaper places to sleep, eat and drink are in Santa Elena , 7km southwest of the Monteverde reserve and 5km south of the Santa Elena reserve. A major hub for the local farming communities, the village is centred on a triangle of three (often muddy) streets. There are a few more places to stay at the hamlet of Cerro Plano , 1km east, while beyond here comes Monteverde proper, essentially a group of dairy farms and smallholdings strung out along a winding, rocky 5km road. Although there are many hotels on this road, it's a much quieter place than Santa Elena, with only the metallic calls of bellbirds and the buzz of motorcycles and Jeeps breaking the silence.
