The southernmost of Belize's three coral atolls, Glover's Reef lies between 40 and 50km off Sittee River. Named after a British pirate, the reef is roughly oval in shape, about 35km north to south, and its only cayes are in the southeastern section. The whole atoll is a marine reserve (US$5 entry fee), with a research station on Middle Caye. What makes Glover's Reef so unusual among the remote atolls is that it offers accommodation within the reach of budget travellers at the Glover's Atoll Resort (tel 614-8351, www.belizemall.com/gloversatoll ) on Northeast Caye . There are twelve simple beach cabins (US$149 per person per week) overlooking the reef, dorm beds in a wooden house (US$99) plus camping space (US$80 per week); the weekly rates include transport from Sittee River in the resort's motor-sailboat (leaves Sunday morning, returns following Saturday afternoon; 4hr). Unless you're here on a group package, you'll need to bring most of your own food (some supplies are available) and cook meals on a kerosene stove or campfire. While here you're pretty much left to your own devices and you can choose either to enjoy the simple, desert island experience or take part in activities (paid for separately), including sailing, sea kayaking, fishing, snorkelling and scuba diving, which is spectacular, thanks to a huge underwater cliff and some tremendous wall diving. Two other cayes at Glover's Reef serve as bases for superb sea kayaking expeditions: Long Caye , just south of Northeast Caye, is the base camp for Slickrock Adventures from Utah, while Southwest Caye serves the same purpose for the Vancouver-based Island Expeditions.
