To the south of Dangriga the country becomes more mountainous, with development restricted to the coastal lowlands. The only road heading in this direction is the Southern Highway , which runs from Dangriga to Punta Gorda. Paving began a few years ago, and at present about two thirds of the road has a good asphalt surface; the remainder is frequently graded and strong bridges have been built. For its entire length the road is set back from the coast, running beneath the peaks of the Maya Mountains, passing through pine forest and vast citrus and banana plantations. Branch roads lead off to settlements, such as Hopkins , a Garifuna village on the coast, and the nearby Creole village of Sittee River , where you can catch the boat to the idyllic cayes of Glover's Reef . From the village of Maya Center , 36km south of Dangriga, a road leads west into the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, usually referred to as the Jaguar Reserve .
