South of Dangriga, a good dirt road cuts east from the Southern Highway, reaching the sea at Riversdale before heading south down the narrow, sandy Placencia Peninsula , through the Garifuna village of Seine Bight to the laid-back village of Placencia , which sits perched at the tip of the peninsula 75km from Dangriga. Strung out along the peninsula are a dozen or so upmarket resorts , most of them owned and operated by expatriate North Americans, where accommodation is usually in cabins with private bathrooms and electricity, with Caribbean beaches a few steps away on one side and the Placencia Lagoon close by on the other. Halfway along the peninsula, on the beautiful stretch of coast called Maya Beach , Barnacle Bill's Beach Bungalows (tel 523-8010, taylors@btl.net ; US$100 and over) comprise two large and very well-equipped wooden houses on stilts on a gorgeous sandy beach. A couple of kilometres south, Maya Playa (tel 523-8020, mayaplaya@btl.net ; US$60-80), has four palmetto-and-thatch A-frame cabanas in a beautiful beachfront location. Friendly owner Chuck Meares has built a very tall palapa (thatched hut) on the beach for his kitchen and dining room, and guests are welcome to cook and eat their meals there. Some 3km further, the small Garifuna village of SEINE BIGHT now has several upmarket resorts and one budget hotel , Effie's Guest House (tel 523-4056; US$15-25), with four clean and simple shared-bath rooms upstairs in a wooden house on the beach; friendly owner Effie Hill will prepare delicious meals in her house across the road. The village is worth a visit even if you're not staying: you can hang out and play pool in the Sunshine Bar , listen to Garifuna music in the Wamasa Beyabu Bar , a distinctive green-and-yellow striped building near the south end of the village, and check out Lola Delgados superb (and affordable) oil and acrylic paintings of village life at Lola's Art Gallery and Lagunedu Cafe , further south behind the soccer field. Lola is also a great cook and serves superb Creole and Garifuna dinners followed by music and drumming - it's a good evening, but call 614-2435 to check when she's cooking. Beyond Seine Bight another series of resorts offers upscale accommodation . Kitty's Place , just south of Placencia's airstrip (tel 523-3227, www.kittysplace.com ; US$60-100) is one of the best, a convenient 3km north of the village and offering a variety of accommodation, including apartments, beach cabanas and garden rooms. The restaurant serves delicious Belizean and international food.
