The area inland from Punta Gorda towards the foothills of the Maya Mountains is home to the uniquely Belizean mix of Mopan Maya with Kekchi speakers from the Verapaz highlands of Guatemala. For the most part each group keeps to its own villages, language and traditions, although both are partially integrated into modern Belizean life and most people speak English. The region's villages are connected to Punta Gorda by road, but while there's a basic bus service from Punta Gorda (check with the information offices for times), getting around isn't that easy: in many places you'll have to rely on hitching - and traffic is sparse - or walking. The easiest village to reach is San Antonio , served by regular buses from Punta Gorda.
