Although the Maya sites in northern Belize have been the source of a number of the most important archeological finds in the Maya world, they are not (with the exception of Lamanai) as monumentally spectacular as those in the Yucatan. The area around Orange Walk has some of the most productive arable farmland in Belize, and this was also the case in Maya times - aerial surveys in the late 1970s revealed evidence of raised fields and a network of irrigation canals, showing that the Maya practised skilful intensive agriculture. In the Postclassic era this region controlled the trade in cacao beans (used as currency by the Maya) that were grown in the Hondo and New river valleys. For a while the Maya here were even able to resist the conquistadors, and Maya rebellions continued long after nominal Spanish rule had been established in 1544.
