Leaving Belize City, the well-paved Western Highway skirts the shoreline, running behind a tangle of mangrove swamps. After 26km the road passes through Hattieville (named after the 1961 hurricane), where an unpaved turning north to Burrell Boom is used as a short cut to the Northern Highway, bypassing Belize City. If time permits you should allow an hour or two visit the Belize Zoo , one of the finest in Latin America. You'd need to stay at least overnight to fully appreciate the Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary , but Guanacaste National Park is another worthwhile stop right by the roadside. For most people the capital, Belmopan , is no more than a break in the bus ride, though if you're heading south for Dangriga or Placencia this is the place to change buses. Beyond Belmopan the landscape becomes a little more hilly and a few unpaved side roads head south into the uplands, leading to some of Belize's most spectacular scenery. However, you're better off continuing to the delightful riverside town of San Ignacio for a night or two's stay.
