Most of St Thomas's resorts are found on the east side of the island whose main settlement, RED HOOK , surrounding the bay of the same name, is the other town of note on St Thomas. Though much smaller, not nearly as cultured as Charlotte Amalie and easily done in a day, it's a fun little place to shop, eat and grab a drink or two. With its few malls, it caters mostly to the hundreds of folks who get on and off ferries leading to and from St John, Tortola and other Caribbean islands, and to the high-end resorts nearby. The main tourist attractions on this side of the island are the beaches and the Coral World Marine Park , on Route 38 at Coki Point (daily 9am-5.30pm; US$18, US$9 children; tel 340/775-1555). This 4.5-acre park boasts an imaginative array of marine and non-marine attractions including the Undersea Observatory, Sea Trekkin' (separate fee US$68) - an air helmet that enables you to walk along an underwater trail - Caribbean Reef Encounter (an 80,000-gallon tank teeming with reef life), Turtle Pool, and Iguana Feeding Area. Coki Beach on Smith Bay right next to Coral World Marine Park is probably the best beach for snorkelling on the island, though it can get really crowded. Come early to avoid the throngs of cruise-ship snorkellers. There's a great natural reef, plus all the amenities you could want: snack trucks, drinks, rental equipment and much more.
