St Thomas's Cyril E. King Airport is three miles west of Charlotte Amalie. VITRAN buses run from the airport to Charlotte Amalie; the first leaves at 6am and the last at 9.30pm. Taxis (for 2 persons) to Charlotte Amalie cost around US$5; for resorts on the eastern end of the island it's US$10-20. Most major car rental companies have offices at the airport and in Havensight Mall.

Information booths at the airport offer free brochures and maps, including helpful publications such as St Thomas This Week and the West Indies Visitor's Guide . In downtown Charlotte Amalie, there is a USVI Division of Tourism office at the Old Customs House (tel 340/774-8784). There's also a National Park Service visitor centre across the street from the ferry dock in Red Hook. Post offices are located in Emancipation Garden, Charlotte Amalie (tel 340/774-3750); on Veteran's Drive, Charlotte Amalie (tel 340/774-6980); and at the Havensight Mall (tel 340/776-9897). Charlotte Amalie has a few internet cafes : Beans, Bytes & Websites in the Royal Dane Mall (tel 340/777-7089); Kings Caribbean Coffee Cafe at the Waterfront, and the Royal Dane and Havensight malls (tel 340/774-0677); and Little Switzerland Internet Cafe, Main Street (tel 340/776-2010).

Getting around the island, VITRAN buses operate services to Red Hook (hourly 5.30am-8.30pm) and to the west as well. Taxis come in all shapes and sizes - vans, cars and trucks; reputable operators include Allie's Taxi Stand (tel 340/777-8007); East End Taxi Service Ferry Dock (tel 340/775-6974); and Islander Taxi & Tour Services (tel 340/774-4077).

From town to the east of the island, including Red Hook, the fare for two people is US$10-15. General two-hour sightseeing tours go for about US$30.

Although you don't need a car on St Thomas, it will give you a much better feel for the island and you can even take the car ferry (US$27 round-trip) over to St John for the day. Options include Avis (tel 340/774-1468); Budget (tel 340/776-5774); Discount Car Rental (tel 340/776-4858); and Tri Island Car Rental (tel 340/776-2879).
