Hop on a ferry (US$3 one-way) for a relaxing day trip across the harbour to Hassel Island and Water Island. Uninhabited HASSEL ISLAND is part of the Virgin Islands National Park system. Relaxed exploration can be fun but there's not much to see here, apart from the relics of an old British military garrison from their occupation during the 1800s and the shell of a failed hotel (the hotel from Herman Wouk's novel Don't Stop the Carnival ). WATER ISLAND (ferry from Crown Bay Marina; US$3 each way) has a small population but is slowly developing into the fourth USVI - bring a picnic and spend the day lazing on its glorious sandy beaches or cycling round the island. Water Island Bike Tours at Crown Bay Marina (tel 340/714-2186) do three- to four-hour bike tours of the island, mostly on paved roads (US$49).
