With a car or by taxi it's worth seeking out some of the attractions just outside Charlotte Amalie. On Route 40 north of town, Drake's Seat , crowded with tour buses, is a popular lookout point where it is said Sir Francis Drake himself sat to look out for his fleet and watch for enemy ships. On the same road, roughly two miles west, the mountainside perch of Estate St Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens (daily 9am-4pm; tel 340/774-4999) is worth a trip for the breathtaking views alone. Once you've got your breath back, grab a complimentary rum punch, shop for local art and take a tour of the luscious gardens which boast over two hundred species of plants and trees. Two and a half miles east of town on Route 38 at Tutu, Tillet Gardens (tel 340/775-1929) was once a Danish farm; it's now St Thomas's answer to an artists' colony, where you'll find all sorts of artisans at work and a shop to buy their wares. Call ahead to time your visit with one of the many jazz and classical concerts. Nearby, Polli's Mexican Restaurant is a great place to stop off for a bite before heading back to town.
