This spectacular and varied National Park encompasses about 7200 acres above ground and 5600 acres of marine sanctuary. The land was donated - with the stipulation it would be used for a National Park - to the federal government in 1956 by the then owner Laurence Rockefeller. Before you head off into the wilderness get some information from the National Park Visitor Centre at Cruz Creek, which has an exhibition and free literature, and get hold of a copy of the Park Service's monthly schedule of ranger-led activities, such as adventure hikes, snorkelling trips, history programmes and nature walks. For some easy self-guided beach hikes that leave from Cruz Bay, ask the park ranger about trailhead locations for Lind Point, Salomon and Honeymoon (the nude beach). You'll need to drive or get a taxi to the start of the self-guided trails to the Annaberg Sugar Mill Ruins, Cinnamon Bay Loop and the Francis Bay Trail. All of these trails are a half-mile over easy terrain. For the more adventurous, there's the Reef Bay Trail , on Centerline Road, accessible by bus. This three-mile hike takes you downhill through rainforest (look for the kapok trees, with their cloaked roots), cactus woodland, past petroglyphs and sugar mill ruins before bringing you out at a beach. You can either hike back up or arrange, for a small fee, for a boat to take you back to Cruz Bay (individuals arrange through the Park Service; groups call Sadie Sea on 340/776-6421).
