There are a few low-key attractions around the island. A five-minute drive out of the town centre, the Elaine Ione Sprauve Library , Enighed Estate, Rte 104 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; free; tel 340/776-6359), is an eighteenth-century house containing an extensive collection of Caribbean reference materials unavailable anywhere else in the world and a display of photographs and artefacts. Four miles northeast of town, above Leinster Bay, a walk around the ruins of the well-preserved 1733 Annaberg Plantation (US$4) will give you your best impression of what a sugar plantation was like, plus some amazing views of the British Virgin Islands. If this whets your appetite for more ruins, visit the Catherineberg Sugar Mill Ruins (Rte 10), once a sugar plantation and rum factory, which, after the revolt of the 1730s served as the headquarters for the slave uprising. On the east side of the island the hills rise to a peak at Bordeaux Mountain (1277ft), the highest spot on St John. Stop for a scoop of ice cream or have some lunch or dinner on patios overlooking Lameshur Bay.
