Getting Around
There aren't many bus stops on St Croix and they're not very conveniently located. VITRAN runs between Christiansted and Frederiksted (Mon-Sat every 30min; Sun every hour) but private taxis , running along Queen Mary Highway, are just as good an option. They stop on demand, which can be time-consuming, but they're cheap and are widely used by commuting locals (around US$2 before 6pm and US$2.50 after). If you need to call ahead for one, try St Croix Taxi Association (at the airport, tel 340/778-1088); Antilles Taxi Service, Christiansted (tel 340/773-5020); Caribbean Taxi Service Tours (tel 340/773-9799); or Frederiksted Taxi Tours (tel 340/772-4775). Alternatively, most hotels and resorts have cut-rate shuttles that will take you back and forth from Christiansted and Frederiksted at prearranged times (ask ahead). From the East End, taxis - generally station wagons, trucks or minivans - to Christiansted will cost between US$15 and US$25 for a round-trip, double that for Frederiksted. St Croix is a great island for driving around, especially along the St Croix Heritage Trail . Should you find the need for a car, several car rental firms have offices in and around Christiansted: Budget (tel 340/773-2285); Caribbean Jeep and Car Rental (tel 340/773-4399); Centerline Car Rentals (tel 340/778-0450); Hertz (tel 340/778-1402); and Thrifty (tel 340/773-7200)
