Of the two misshapen islets sitting five kilometres or so out of Tyrrel's Bay, Goat Island is the closer, though it's privately owned and closed to the public. However, birdwatchers and hikers flock to the larger island, Little Tobago , a kilometre further out to sea. Known as "Bird of Paradise Island", it has been a bird sanctuary since 1924. Uninhabited, it's home to one of the largest seabird colonies in the Caribbean, including flocks of frigates, boobies, terns and the spectacular red-billed tropic bird, the latter especially prevalent between October and June. Make sure you take drinking water with you, as there are no refreshments available on the island. To get the most from your visit, hire an experienced guide such as David Rooks (tel 868/639-4276, ; US$60), the man who persuaded David Attenborough to include Little Tobago in his famous BBC Trials of Life documentary. Local fishermen will be happy to take you to Little Tobago as well for around TT$75, though if you're interested in birdwatching, it's better to go in more expert company.
