From the centre of Plymouth, a well-signposted but narrow road meanders through the greenery toward Arnos Vale , one of the few sugar estates to keep its land. The main point of access is at the old estate water wheel , now slickly packaged as a tourist attraction (daily 8am-11pm; TT$10). The wheel, pump and steam train that once transported sugar around the plantation have been restored, but the modest museum is disappointing, displaying a small selection of Amerindian pottery and colonial artefacts. Still, the estate is a pretty spot, lavish with flowering plants and lush foliage and nice for a relaxing drink. The local bay - overlooked by a hotel of faded grandeur - is great for snorkelling. Road improvements have finally linked Arnos Vale with the rest of the leeward coast. If you continue eastward along the coastal road for approximately ten kilometres you'll eventually hit Moriah and later Castara .
