A mile or so beyond Turtle Beach, Grafton Road meets a junction, where a left turn leads to Plymouth , Tobago's first European community, settled first by Latvians, then the Dutch and finally by the British. An attractive little town, its main attraction is Fort James , the oldest stockade in Tobago, built in 1811 by the British. The coral-stone structure and four cannons preside over an excellent view of Turtle Beach. If you're driving up the coast, it's wise to fill your tank at Plymouth's petrol station, as it's the only one for miles (Mon-Sat 6.30am-9pm, Sun 5.30am-9pm).
