Getting Around
Tobago's public transport system is slow and erractic, meaning renting a car is the best option if you're only on the island for a few days. Most of the international and local car rental operators are clustered around the airport; local operators tend to be cheaper but are less likely to offer 24-hour assistance. Sherman's (tel 868/639-2292) is a recommended local operator, and amongst the internationals, Thrifty (tel 868/639-8507) is reliable. Expect to leave a deposit , usually a credit card imprint; a notable exception is Auto Rentals (tel 868/639-0644), which has one of the largest fleets in Tobago. Scooters are available from some beach outlets and cost approximately US$20 a day. Motorbikes are catching on fast and there are several places offering dirt bikes for about US$30 per day. The blue-banded maxi taxis run only between Scarborough and Charlotteville. However, the route taxi network is extensive and convenient for short hops in the western portion of the island. If you're heading further afield, you'll need to travel into Scarborough, where the main taxi ranks are located by the docks. Tobago's buses have greatly improved in recent years. From Scarborough, buses run along the windward coast to Charlotteville (6 daily; 4.30am-6.30pm, variable times). The leeward coast route extends from Scarborough to L'Anse Fourmi via Moriah, Castara, Englishman's Bay, Parlatuvier and Bloody Bay (6 daily, 4.30am-6.30pm, variable times). In the Lowlands, buses run from Scarborough to Mount Thomas via Les Coteaux and Golden Lane (8 daily, 5am-6pm, every two hours); they also go from Scarborough to Plymouth via Mount Irvine and Black Rock (5am-8pm, hourly). All tickets must be pre-purchased (fares range TT$2-8) and are available from shops in the airport complex and throughout the island.
