Behind the residential fretworked facades of the suburbs of Port of Spain lies the engine room of T&T's cultural life. The creative energy of Carnival production is concentrated in the western suburb of Woodbrook , while further west still, the streets of St James come alive with revellers at night throughout the year. In the east, Laventille is the home of the Caribbean's favourite instrument, the steel drum , while the suburb of Belmont is home to the fascinating Rada community. All the suburbs are a ten- to twenty-minute walk from the city centre, but as the heat can quickly sap your energy, it's wise to take a taxi to your destination.
