Port of Spain Eating

Eating

Port of Spain's restaurant scene has recently burgeoned. Ariapita Avenue is best for upscale establishments, and you'll most likely need to reserve a table here. For something more casual, there are scores of cafes in the downtown area, while the best street food is located in St James and, to a lesser extent, Independence Square.

Breakfast Shed Wrightson Road, Downtown Port of Spain, next to the Cruise Ship Complex. Hearty, inexpensive and excellent local food, served at long communal trestle tables mainly for local workers; expect to pay under TT$25. The traditional breakfast of bake and shark and cocoa is delicious. Daily 6.30am-3pm.

Chutney Rose 30 Fitt St, corner of Ariapita Ave, Woodbrook tel 868/628-8541. Elaborately decorated Indian restaurant serving Trini-style dishes for lunch - lamb koftas and fish with rice, peas, dhal and salad - and traditional Northern Indian cuisine in the evening. Meals from TT$70. There's also a take-away on site serving good rotis. Mon-Sat 11am-3pm & 6-11pm.

Indego 1 Carib Way, off Sydenham Avenue, St Ann's tel 868/624-6954. Located at the base of the Northern Range, this restaurant has wonderful city views, and the menu ranges from delicious bruschetta and ceviche as starters, to chicken and beef brochettes and imaginative seafood for mains. Meals from TT$150. Tues-Sat 7-11pm.

Irie Bites 68 Ariapita Ave, Woodbrook. Jamaican jerk shack painted red, gold and green that's the best of the cluster on this stretch of Ariapita Avenue. Seasoned with Jamaican spices and cooked over pimento wood, the jerk chicken, pork and fish are served with festival (a sweetish fried dumpling) for under TT$25. Mon-Thurs 11am-8pm, Fri & Sat 11am-9pm.

Mother Nature Vegetarian Restaurant St Vincent Street. Central Port of Spain. Creative vegetarian meals and wonderfully filling fruit punches - everything from beetroot to papaya for under TT$25. Mon-Fri 5am-5pm.

Sweet Lime Corner of Ariapita Avenue and French Street, Woodbrook. A great spot for people-watching and moderate prices (between TT$70-150). Satay chicken, crab backs, mussels and shrimp

Syps 3a Cipriani Blvd, Newtown. Intimate coffee bar and restaurant serving light lunches and dinners of crepes, quiche, crab backs, burritos and tacos. The coffees are delicious too. A great spot for an afternoon lime, a meal will set you back between TT$75-100. Mon-Thurs 10am-10pm, Fri & Sat 10am-midnight, Sun 10am-2pm & 6-10pm.
