One of the most appealing villages on the Toco coast, Grande Riviere , is also the only place in the area with any kind of tourist infrastructure. The beautiful beachside Mount Plaisir Estate hotel has spurred local residents to open up guesthouses , but development has remained low-key. Local people tend to be incredibly welcoming, often throwing parties for leaving guests. The village boasts a superlative beach , famous for nesting leatherback turtles - it's common for 150 or more to lay simultaneously here in season. Local residents have formed the Grande Riviere Environmental Awareness Trust, to guard against poachers and provide guides (ask for Francisco or Carlos Chance at the Mount PlaisirEstate hotel; TT$18, children TT$10). As well as the beach there are hosts of waterfalls and river walks , and also excellent birdwatc hing - including the rare piping guan. Most guides work through the hotel; it's best to ask here for a reputable one. As for village life and entertainment, most of the action occurs at the Mount Plaisir Estate hotel, where the bar is everyone's favourite liming spot. The road past Grande Riviere is passable, but only just. Apart from the popular swimming spot, Shark River, there's little reason to continue, and the road soon ends at the tiny fishing hamlet of Matelot
