Off the EMR, just past the busy town of Curepe, lies the crucifix-lined, serpentine St John's Road, the route to Mount St Benedict Monastery . Visible from the central plains, the white-walled, red-roofed buildings dominate the hillside. Established in 1912 by Benedictine monks fleeing religious persecution in Brazil, it's a great place to go for spectacular views, peace and quiet and a spot of afternoon tea at the neighbouring Pax Guesthouse (daily 3-6pm). Taxis for Mount St Benedict leave from the corner of St John's Road and the EMR (TT$3). Past the junction with the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and the entrance to the University of the West Indies St Augustine Campus lies Caura Royal Road, the turn-off for Caura Valley - one of the most popular picnic and hiking spots in the East-West Corridor.
