East of Mount St Benedict Monastery and easily missed is Arouca, notable only as the point where you turn off the EMR onto snaking Lopinot Road for an eight-kilometre drive to Lopinot . This pretty hamlet is best known for the Lopinot complex , a former cocoa estate that has been transformed into a beautiful, secluded picnic spot (daily 6am-6pm; free). Settled by the Comte de Lopinot , a planter who fled Haiti following the 1791 revolution, the estate house has been carefully restored, complete with a small museum dedicated to the culture of local residents. The community - mainly of Spanish, African and Amerindian descent - has spawned some of Trinidad's finest parang players; they can be heard at Christmas and the annual harvest festival on May 17. The route taxi fare from Arouca to Lopinot is TT$3; cars are fairly frequent (Mon-Sat 5am-6pm), but the service is reduced on Sundays.
