Running along the southern flank of the Northern Range, the East-West Corridor is traversed by the Eastern Main Road (EMR), a driver's nightmare, the Priority Bus Route , a fast-track commuter thoroughfare that's accessible only to public transport, and the Churchill Roosevelt Highway , a quick route connecting Port of Spain with the northeast tip. Hot and dusty as it is, the slow pace of the EMR allows you to absorb the commercial chaos, passing through the old Spanish capital of St Joseph and ending at Arima , the corridor's largest town and home to what's left of Trinidad's Carib community. The road is also the gateway to many a day trip from Port of Spain, including the Maracas waterfall and the Mount St Benedict Monastery . Beyond Arima, the buildings let up, but a few country lanes lead to the two most impressive waterfalls on the island, La Laja and Sombasson .
