Crime and Safety
Though Trinidad has a reputation in the region for violent crime, much of this is exaggerated and crime rarely affects tourists. In Tobago crime is rare - most locals leave their doors unlocked. Use your common sense and take the precautions you would in any strange environment. If you need the police, dial 999, and for emergency services (fire and ambulance) it's tel 990. Harassment hasn't reached anything like the proportions you'll encounter in more established destinations, but as independent travellers are still a novelty, women travelling solo should expect attention. This usually consists of verbal comments and is rarely threatening. Though you may be offered marijuana , and perhaps even cocaine in Tobago, it is illegal to sell or possess either and penalties are severe.
