Situated in a sheltered bay on the southwest tip of St Vincent, the hardworking harbour town of Kingstown is the island's commercial hub. On weekdays the town moves at a frantic pace, especially around the bustling jetty, bus station and fish market. The heat here can be fierce as sea breezes barely penetrate the compact, one-way streets, lined with warehouses and dense with human and commercial traffic. Though breathtaking from a distance, Kingstown's harbour reveals the grubbiness of an active port city when you get closer to it. There's little to see along the industrial waterfront, but this matters little as the town's main appeal lies in its entertaining streets . Dressed in pristine white shirts and gloves, the traffic officers directing vehicles through the narrow roads lend an unexpected air of formality to this energetic, but laid-back town where locals are so preoccupied that they hardly glance at tourists. Things slow down considerably in the evenings when Kingstown is a shadow of its busy weekday self, and on Saturday afternoons and Sundays the town is very quiet. Not far away are the major beach resort options on the island, Villa Beach and Indian Bay , both with some build-up, though neither as good a choice as the offshore islands within easy reach of the town.
