The highway on the Windward coast leads all the way up to the village of Fancy , at St Vincent's northern tip, and offers startling views of rugged coastline and sweeping beaches. A noteworthy stop along the Windward side is the windswept beach of Argyle , a bleak and rocky stretch more reminiscent of northern Scotland than the Caribbean - no swimming is allowed here. Situated to the west of Argyle is the rich fertile valley of Mesopotamia , where bananas, nutmeg, cocoa, coconuts and breadfruit all grow in abundance. Here and further north in the colourful Montreal Gardens (Dec-Aug Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; EC$5), the views of the river valleys and ocean are, some say, hard to match anywhere in the Caribbean. Most buses travel only as far as Georgetown , halfway up the coast; check at the bus station in Kingstown if you want to travel further up. To get to Georgetown you'll have to pass through the Black Point Tunnel , which was drilled by slave labour in 1815 to create a direct route for transporting sugar from the northern plantations to Kingstown. The 350ft tunnel was considered an engineering feat in its time and remains impressive today, especially as you can still see the old blast holes in the volcanic rock. The only other point of interest on this highway is the Owia Salt Pond , a short distance south of Fancy, near the village of Owia - home to the remaining descendants of the Black Caribs. The tidal pools are sheltered from the roiling Atlantic by a huge wall of rock, and the cool, clean salt waters here are used by locals and visitors alike.
