Practicalities
If you're not staying in the main beach resorts or Kingstown, the Leeward coast offers really the only other major facilities around. Try the Emerald Valley Resort and Casino , Penniston Valley (tel 784/456-7824, fax 456-7145, eemvcasino@caribsurf ; US$75-100), a collection of tropical lodges in a peaceful Leeward valley, all with kitchenettes and balconies overlooking a mountain stream. The beach is an energetic one-mile walk away, but the resort has its own pool and tennis courts, and even a casino, which offers all the typical gaming options. Buccament Bay is where you'll find the best place to eat in all of St Vincent, Buccama on the Bay (tel 784/456-7855). Reservations are required for dinner, when a three-course meal - fresh and delicious, prepared with produce from local farms - costs just US$26-30. The restaurant can be reached by bus from Kingstown; just ask to be dropped off at Buccament's main road and follow the signposted dirt track for about ten minutes down to the sea. A return taxi to Kingstown costs about EC$40.
