On the Leeward coast the road clings to the mountainside, with little to protect you from the steep drops, and runs as far as Richmond Beach . The drive will take you past lush valleys, formerly the site of vast plantations, but now farmed by small-holder farmers, and black-sand beaches, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Less than a mile north of the pretty village of Barrouallie , with its quaint, ornately trimmed houses, is the tranquil, black-sand beach of Wallilabou Bay . There are no facilities here, so bring your own food, but the idyllic surrounds are perfect for a quiet bit of sunbathing and a dip in the ocean. While you are in the area, continue north for a mile on the inland side of the road to reach Wallilabou Falls , an attractive 13ft cascade of water where you can escape the heat by taking a refreshing swim. Well worth a visit is Buccament Bay , a half-hour drive or bus ride from Kingstown. Reached by a short walk from the main road down a dirt track - marked by a signpost to Buccama on the Bay restaurant - this small, secluded horseshoe beach is used more by local villagers than tourists. Gazing inland from the beach, past the fishing nets hung out to dry, you'll find the view of the rugged mountain peaks stunning. The valley here is the site of a former sugar plantation; the cliffs that frame it feature some of St Vincent's ancient petroglyphs . As you walk along the dirt track towards the beach, you'll come across a sign on the left-hand side announcing the "Petroglyphs of Buccament". Although some of the fields in the area are fenced off and look like private land, visitors can walk up to the cliff face (watch out for the grazing cows along the way) to view a collection of evocative white etchings in the rock.
