St Vincent's interior can only be explored by walking trails, which are not always well marked. The Vermont Nature Trails on the Leeward side, about five miles from Kingstown, are one of the few places where you are likely to spot the endangered St Vincent parrot, a colourful bird recognizable by its pale head, blue tail and wing-tip feathers, and russet wings. Here the Parrot Lookout trail threads its way through lush rainforest, rising approximately 500ft, and you also stand a good chance of seeing hummingbirds, black hawks and green heron along the way. The trails begin near the top of Buccament Valley and pass picnic areas along the way. Hiking is also excellent in the north of the island around the stunning peak of La Soufriere . The trail to the summit leads through fertile rainforest, banana plantations and volcanic ridges and is a rigorous one: the ascent to the crater is approximately three miles and takes around five hours. The best way to explore this area is on an organized tour as the trail is not clearly marked and guides can also point out features along the way. In the remote northwest tip, beyond the reach of the coastal highway, lie the breathtaking 60ft Falls of Baleine , where a swim in the large rock-lined pool is unforgettable and time spent in this stunning spot is well worth the trip. The falls are only reachable by organized tour.
