The Jasper
The tiny passenger and cargo boat The Jasper runs between Union Island and Grenada's Carriacou on Monday and Thursday, leaving from the jetty at Ashton village on Union Island for Carriacou at 6.30am and departing Hillsborough on Carriacou for the return journey to Union Island at 12.30pm. The trip takes approximately one hour and the fare is EC$15 one-way. To travel between the two islands you must go through immigration , either on Carriacou at the end of the Hillsborough jetty or on Union Island at the airport. The bus fare from Ashton to the airport is EC$3 and a bus will be waiting when The Jasper docks to transfer passengers. If you're arriving on Union Island from Carriacou, you must board this bus as you'll need to pass through immigration at the airport. Be aware that The Jasper is a small, wooden motor-powered boat that has seen better days and which sometimes runs under sail, so expect a rough ride even when the sea looks calm. As well, departure can be delayed if the boat is waiting for cargo. If you're adventurous and have good sea legs, The Jasper can be fun - if not take a plane.
