Situated just seven miles southeast of Bequia, beautiful MUSTIQUE is a fantasy island for the ultra-rich. Most visitors to the island are day-trippers drawn by the island resort's air of exclusivity, though their explorations are fairly restricted as much of place is privately owned and curious visitors are discouraged. Those who do spend some time here can enjoy the island's hilly terrain, its large plain to the north and seven lush valleys leading to the white-sand beaches along its coast. Mustique's first inhabitants were European planters who arrived in the 1740s. The decline of the West Indian sugarcane industry in later years led to the closing of the plantations, and prospects for the island faded. Mustique didn't regain its footing until 1958 when Scottish landowner Colin Tennant bought the 1400-acre island for GBP45,000 and transformed it into a holiday hot-spot for the rich and famous. Now under the management of a private corporation, the island is a haven for pop stars and celebrities of the likes of Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Elton John, all of whom own properties on the island
