With a population of a mere 250 occupants, MAYREAU is the smallest of the inhabited Grenadine islands. It almost goes without saying that the beaches, watersports and views are wonderful, but unless you want to splash out for a stay at one of the exclusive resorts, there is little to warrant anything more than a day's exploration. As with most of the small Grenadines, visitors come for the immaculate beaches, of which Saline Bay and Salt Whistle Bay are justly popular. The sands of Saline Bay in the south are nearly a mile long and completely undeveloped, though when a cruise ship visits the island this beach can get very busy. With dazzling white sand and pale-blue waters Salt Whistle Bay , home of a small resort, is both stunning and a favourite anchorage for yachts. Good hiking can be found on the island. A long trail winds its way from Salt Whistle Bay to Salt Whistle village, home to a striking, tiny stone Catholic Church whose windows and grounds provide incredible views. If you visit the church during a local wedding, you'll be fortunate, as these are very well celebrated on Mayreau; flags are flown from relatives' houses and rum is sprinkled over graves to encourage ancestors to bless the union. To get married on the island you'll need to stay more than 72 hours, and a more romantic setting would be hard to find.
