In the middle of the Grenadine island chain, tiny, crescent-shaped CANOUAN - the Carib word for turtles - consists of three square miles of lush green hills and beautiful reef-protected white-sand beaches. It is these beaches that draw an increasing number of visitors and the island is largely set up to cater for their needs. The low, undulating hills are pleasant for walking, and you'll meet more goats than people along its peaceful pathways. However, there's no beating the beaches and the sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling and diving here are all first-class. The coral reefs are just offshore, which means the beaches are well protected and snorkellers needn't be daring to investigate them - though care should be taken to preserve these living organisms. The local dive company, Dive Canouan (tel 784/458-8044, fax 458-8875), can arrange dives for beginners and experienced divers.
